What do you think of when you think of a San Diego dispensary? Today, you can walk into one of around 50 local recreational marijuana dispensaries and buy cannabis products. You can also have weed delivered to your doorstep through San Diego dispensary delivery services. If you’ve been in California for a while, you may remember what a long, strange trip it has been. (Yes, that’s both a Grateful Dead and a Hunter S. Thompson reference.)

Which San Diego Dispensary Should You Visit?

As far back as 1996, seriously ill patients in California have been permitted by state law to grow and use cannabis for “personal medical treatment” — as long as a licensed physician gave them the okay. But things didn’t really start going in the California legalization movement until around 2013. It was then that federal prosecutors were directed to take a hands-off approach in states like California where pot was legalized through state legislation, so long as cartels and minors weren’t involved. (This is an overly simplified summarization of a directive known as the “Cole memo,” but you get the idea.)

After that, it was only a matter of time before small medical dispensaries started popping up around town. In 2018, you were finally able to go into a recreational dispensary in San Diego and buy weed for personal use. That doesn’t mean there aren’t doctors who specialize in cannabis-related treatment, though. In fact, we recently published an article about medical marijuana doctors in San Diego.

But whether you’re looking for recreational marijuana, medical marijuana, or even just CBD, how do you find the best dispensary in San Diego? We’ve got a list for you here. Let’s not waste any more time talking about weed; let’s get you in touch with San Diego cannabis shops!

Tips for Visiting Dispensaries

We have a couple of “pro tips” for first-time dispensary shoppers. First, dispensaries are cash-only businesses. They have ATMs on the premises, but for a faster visit, bring cash with you. And second, many dispensaries have specials on different days of the week. For example, seniors might get a discount on a certain day of the week, or on other days there might be a discount on everything in the store.

To give you a better idea, we’ve included a list of the specials for Cannabist San Diego, the closest dispensary to downtown La Jolla, below.

La Jolla Dispensaries

Cannabist San Diego

Cannabist San Diego is the closest dispensary to downtown La Jolla. It’s right around the corner from the Pacific Beach In-N-Out Burger (we totally realize that statement sounds like a line from The Big Lebowski), 6 miles by car from La Jolla Cove.

Cannabist opened in August 2021, and their staff is highly knowledgeable and very friendly. They carry everything from “flower,” which is the kind of marijuana that you can smoke in a joint or pipe, to CBD products. They also sell THC and CBD edibles, extracts, pre-rolls, and vapes, along with topical products, seeds so you can grow your own, accessories, and more.

Specials

Take a look at some of their specials available at Cannabist San Diego:

  • Senior Sundays: 30% off 55 or older, 30% off all vapes and house brands.
  • Munchie Mondays: Buy one get one 60% off all edibles and 30% off all house brands.
  • Two for Tuesdays: Buy one get one for $1 entire store – mix and match.
  • Wax Wednesdays: Buy one get one $1 concentrates 8 a.m. – 9 a.m., 30% off concentrates 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Thrifty Thursdays: 25% off the entire store and 50-75% off clearance section.
  • Fridays: Buy one get one 50% off entire store – mix and match.

Torrey Holistics is a San Diego dispensary that originally opened as a medical marijuana dispensary in 2015. This dispensary donates to a lot of local causes including Feeding San Diego, Veteran News Network, and the Will Ferrell-affiliated “Cancer for College” foundation. Torrey Holistics is located in Sorrento Valley between the 5 and the 805, about five minutes from New English Brewing, a local brewery which also sells to-go beer and upon which we heaped much lavish praise in our article called A Beer Lover’s Guide to La Jolla.
