Blacks Beach

Blacks Beach in La Jolla is famous for more than its peaceful vibe, great surf and smooth sand. It was the first nude beach in America, starting in the 1970s, and is still the largest nude beach in the US. However, for those who like to keep things modest, this secluded spot is not 100% bathing suit optional – it’s just one part of it.

A quiet, secluded beach in San Diego

Great for surfing

Famous for part being a nude beach

Is the end point for the Torrey Pines Gliderport Trail

Great for beach activities like boogie boarding

Located below the jagged cliffs of Torrey Pines, Blacks Beach is more secluded and difficult to access than the others. Known for its rugged beauty, epic surf breaks (the spot is still extremely popular with local surfers), and clothing-optional northern section (it’s still the only nude beach in San Diego), Blacks doesn’t offer much in the way of amenities. There are several trails down to the beach, but none are maintained regularly and can be hazardous. Though you have a hike down and a leg-burning hike back up, the lack of crowds, incredible waves, and unique scenery makes Blacks Beach definitely worth the trek.

Dogs Allowed - at certain times

More About Blacks Beach

Besides its European-inspired nudity, Blacks Beach hosts fantastic surf, but be ready to do some hiking with it…One of the reasons this beach is secluded is due to its downhill location. Located beneath some steep cliffs, at many points expect to hike down to the sand. For example, if you park at the head of the Gliderport Trail, you want to be ready to steady yourself down some the somewhat steep downhill climb. (Coming from this point, simply looking right and left will demonstrate the divide of clothing: one side with it, and one without!)

Though you have a hike down and a leg-burning hike back up, beachgoers agree that the lack of crowds & loud music, incredible waves and calmful peace is more than worth the trek. For more about the history and unique story behind Blacks Beach, head here!

Yes, it's a nude beach but not everyone walks around naked. Don't worry, no one will be upset if you choose to keep your clothes on. It's not an easy hike to get down to the beach, but it's well worth it. The views are breathtaking. You don't have to hike down to the beach in order to enjoy the view. I think it's a great walk down

Little bit of a trail to get down to the beach. But, it's a great beach. However - you MIGHT be surprised when you get out on the beach. Clothing has ALWAYS been optional on this beach. So, Take your sunscreen if you're the, um, adventurous type.

Tough to access--but that's partly why it is so great. There aren't that many people willing to brave the steep, complicated hike down
