Overview & Amenities

  • Dogs Allowed - at certain times

Blacks Beach in La Jolla is famous for more than its peaceful vibe, great surf and smooth sand. It was the first nude beach in America, starting in the 1970s, and is still the largest nude beach in the US. However, for those who like to keep things modest, this secluded spot is not 100% bathing suit optional – it’s just one part of it.

Located below the jagged cliffs of Torrey Pines, Blacks Beach is more secluded and difficult to access than the others. Known for its rugged beauty, epic surf breaks (the spot is still extremely popular with local surfers), and clothing-optional northern section (it’s still the only nude beach in San Diego), Blacks doesn’t offer much in the way of amenities. There are several trails down to the beach, but none are maintained regularly and can be hazardous. Though you have a hike down and a leg-burning hike back up, the lack of crowds, incredible waves, and unique scenery makes Blacks Beach definitely worth the trek.
